Monday afternoon and Tuesday, April 14 and 15
What is 50 miles away, 50 miles down, and 4.4?
Most of us awoke in the dark early this Tuesday to a rumbling, some shaking, and the sound of the doors rattling. Could it be the garbage collectors? No, too early. Could it be Fillmore falling out of bed downstairs? No, no screams. Could it be an earthquake? Yep. What a way to start the day.
Monday night before all the excitement we had a remarkable dinner at the restaurant called El Salvador (see FFF below), witnessed a number of alfombras being constructed, from the simplest family pieces to an elaborate one sponsored the Porta hotel, and watched a most impressive nighttime procession in which the anda (float) was illuminated by lights powered with a generator tagging along behind.
Fill's Food Forum - Never too Full
Monday, the 14th, found us at El Salvador restaurant on Calle 6, which had nothing to do with El Salvador except the name. None the less, it was a real find. Pupusa at Q10 each. Three was a meal, which is what T, S, and I had: S had pork, pollo, and beans; T had pork, pollo, and beef; I had pork, pollo, and jalapeno, all also with queso. Joan's pollo dish was the best meal she has had so far. Including 6 cervecas and 2 desserts, the bill was about $35 US. Best value so far, by far. And our waiter was a hoot, to say the least. He was a young Guatemalan straight out of La Cage o Folles, and without a clue about being a waiter - from taking an order to tallying up a bill. Anywhere else he would have been an annoyance, but here he added to the ambiance and made the experience all the more memorable.
Today, Tuesday, we had our major meal mid-afternoon at El Tenador del Cerro, a beautiful spot atop a hill on the outskirts overlooking the city. A well-appointed, artistic destination. My baby back ribs were good, but Tennessee has nothing to worry about. My tomato and hearts of palm salad was very tasty. J and S liked their excellent black bean soup over avocado and tortilla chips, with queso. 4 of 5 stars. T liked his cheeseburger. And the artwork on the grounds is more than reason enough to make the trip up the mountain from Santo Domingo (hotel/restaurant/historical site) in a 12 passenger golf cart.
