#9 We're through the line. Sunday April 21, 2014

#9 We're through the line. Sunday April 20, 2014

Rumors of strikes in Guatemala City that would impede our travel proved unfounded.  So we have a couple of hours here this Monday morning in the airport to relax, reminisce, and record.

Easter Sunday, yesterday, in Antigua was a great low key climax to a perfect week.  We meandered down to the central square around 11 AM, people watched for a half-hour or so and then decided to head past some of the day's alfombras (in front of the church too) to a rooftop restaurant at the end of 6th street called Cafe Sky.  It was right on the route of the procession scheduled to begin at 1 PM a couple of blocks down the street at Templo San Pedro.  It was expected to get to the street right under where we sat at about 1:45, meandering a block or two south from the church (which we could see one block west), then heading east a long block, then north to us.

Perfect timing.  We arrived at cafe sky at noon before the crowds and got a table inside (in the shade) on the second floor inside right next to our own small terrace.  After we each had a liquado and a light lunch the procession turned the corner and passed right under us at 1:45.  In the meantime, we had the opportunity to see alfombras being built up and down the street (Avedida 1a sur).  The Easter procession is a joyous one with a band (including a keyboard player on a pickup truck)playing all kinds of music.

A leisurely walk home and haircuts for Fillmore and Terry preceded packing for our return home and then a nice dinner at a French restaurant called Como Como on Calle 6 oriente).

Our last full day, Sunday the 20th, yielded good food.  Lunch at Cafe Sky (Aveneda 1 and Calle 6) found us on a 2nd floor table next to a private balcony with a perfect view of the procession.  T, S, and I had fruit liquidos (smoothies) while J had a chocolate one.  Very good.  Then S and J had good chicken-vegetable soup; I had a small French onion soup (not like we are used to, but habenaro sauce works wonders) and a small BLT (bacon under cooked).  T had a nutritious cerveza.

Dinner was at Como Como, a French place on Calle 6.  Delicious, especially the grouper (S and me).  J's chicken pot pie and T's pasta were also very good.  We were first in, but the place was full when we left.  Lots of French being spoken amongst the clientele.

# 8, Ain't that Great

#8 Ain't that Great - Good Friday April 18 and Saturday April 19 plus one photo early Easter Sunday Morning

Friday was a day of alfombras and four processions that clogged the town. Sandy and Joan drew and we wandered through the crowds soaking up the ambiance of the season.

Saturday morning found us on 20 minute chicken bus ride to the outskirts of the village of Duen(tilda)as for a visit to Valhalla, a macadamia nut farm specializing in the sustainable organic farming and distribution of macadamia trees to indigenous people.  Since its beginning about ten years ago, the farm has distributed more than 300,000 saplings to indigenous people around the area to help them grow sustainable cash crops not dependent on the coffee bean and the volatile coffee market.

It's run by Lorenzo and Emilia Gottshamer.  He's quite an ambassador for the cause and quite a character to boot.

Friday the 18th and back to Rony's to build our own tacos.  Beef, pork, and delicious.  Very affordable, especially since T accidentally tried to stiff them 15Q for the liquado we had for dessert.

Saturday the 19th was a real culinary roller coaster.  Fantastic breakfast at the macadamia farm, with macadamia pancakes served with macadamia butter, fresh blueberry jam, and honey.  The ladies had delicious hot chocolate.

Light lunch (salads) at Mama's on Calle 4.  Dinner at Don Martin behind La Merced was not up to expectations.  We had met an ex-pat who raved about it, but maybe she isn't used to good food.
